[Bookplate for John Allen Brown by C. Bird] The bookplate portrays a prehistoric scene shown from the perspective of a fur-clad man and woman looking from inside a cave towards a primitive wilderness scene (with stags and a mammoth). The image is framed by an assortment of artifacts, such as vases, swords, axe heads, flints, and other weapons. At the right bottom of the frame is a dagger with a flag inscribed with the initials "S.P.Q.R." an acronym for the Latin phrase "Senatus Populusque Romanus" ("The Senate and Roman People"). Below the picture is an open book on the left side of which is a shield and on the right side the bookplate text. The shield is blue with a gold chevron and three clams. At the top of the shield is mantling and closed helmet signifying esquire or gentleman. On the left side of the shield is a banner reading: "MENTE ET MALLEO." 42. [Bookplate for Johannis Platt by John Dickson Batten] This bookplate has both heraldic and pictoral qualities. The primary subject of the bookplate is a lamb, grazing in a glade of flowers, with bookplate owner's name in a banner below. In the background, the bookplate features a pen of sheep as well as a dead wolf hanging from a tree. At top-left corner, the bookplate features an escutcheon, azure (blue), charged with two fleur-de-lis and a lamb, two over one, and a chevron or (gold) charged with a fleur-de-lis and two cinque foil. Above the escutcheon is a peer helmet, with a wreath charged with a grazing lamb. Mantling radiates from the helmet, and Welsh motto is contained on one side. The entire scene is contained within a stylized border, with Welsh motto within. 43. [Bookplate for James Scott Howard] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a ship’s steering wheel with stringy foliage extending from the left and leafy foliage extending from the right atop a crest-wreath. Shield is sable and party per fess. Top section is charged with a white cross in the center with a fleur-de-lis on either side. The bottom section is charged with a white ship steering wheel that is identical to the one in the crest. The motto is printed on curling ribbon below the shield in capitalized, serif, white block font with black outline. Below the motto, the bookplate owner’s name Is printed in sentence case, black, serif font. 44. [Bookplate for James Phinney Baxter] In black ink. This ex-libris includes a portrait of the originator in the upper-right-hand corner, identified by his name and geographic locale. The remaining two-thirds of the bookplate consist of a depiction of the interior of a library. In a section spanning the base of the bookplate is a cursive, printed motto and a hand-written book number. The printed text is drawn from the last two lines of the second stanza of a poem composed by Baxter, entitled, "The Library." 45. [Bookplate for James Henry Browning] Centered text with multiple fonts in black ink. 46. [Bookplate for James G. J. Penderel Brodhurst by M. Soane] This highly detailed bookplate contains an escutcheon quartered per cross, with a label (symbolizing an heir, first son) at the precise middle chief. The first and fourth quarters are argent (silver) with fretty of twelve pieces, embattled. The second and third quarters are argent, with a tree proper and a fess, argent with sable (black) fillet, containing three royal crowns. Upon the escutcheon rests a large coronet, resembling that of an earl. Above the coronet are two straight crest wreaths. On the dexter wreath is a nested swan, wings displayed argent and elevated, with fretty of twelve pieces, sable and embattled. On the belly of the swan is an argent mullet. On the sinister wreath are a crossed sceptre and sword. Above them is a royal crown. In between and on either side of the wreath symbols are what appear to be leaves. Above the wreath symbols is a banner containing the Latin motto. The escutcheon is accompanied by two supporters. The dexter supporter is a dragon with an argent mullet on its chest, while the sinister supporter is a griffin, also with a mullet on its chest. Below the escutcheon and the supporters is an additional banner. 47. [Bookplate for James Blackman] This simple bookplate consists of text encircled by two curved branches. 48. [Bookplate for James Bell] Centered text in black ink, with three fonts. 49. [Bookplate for J.E.G. Bibliothèque] Green ink on white paper. Thin green border is straight on the left, right, and bottom sides and rounded on top. Three capitalized letters are printed in stylized, rounded green font. Below the letters is text in pseudo-gothic sentence-case font. Underneath that text is a small green circle with two lines extending from its left and right. Below is text in the previous pseudo-gothic font in a larger size. There are several images underneath the text. There is a line of three images: an open book with curling pages in the center with a six-pointed star on either side. The left star has a plus sign in the middle and the right star has a question mark in its center. Three more images are below: a green owl on a branch in the center with lit oil lamps on either side. The lamps each point inwards towards the owl and sit on thin green lines. Below the images is a thin green oval border that is straight on the top and bottom sides. Inside is curling thin green text sitting on a thin green line. At the right end of the line is another thicker perpendicular green line dividing the oval into two uneven sections. 50. [Bookplate for J.E.G. Bibliothèque] Black ink on white paper. Thin black border is straight on the left, right, and bottom sides and rounded on top. Three capitalized letters are printed in stylized, rounded black font. Below the letters is text in pseudo-gothic sentence-case font. Underneath that text is a small black circle with two lines extending from its left and right. Below is text in the previous pseudo-gothic font in a larger size. [Bookplate for J. Hunt Stanford] An armorial bookplate printed in black ink on white paper. A buck couped argent (silver) with antlers or (gold) gorged gules (red) with a crest wreath, argent and azure (silver and blue), sits on a visored helm facing dextor with argent mantling. The shield: argent three bars azure, and in the dextor canton azure an arm or clenched with sword. The motto, 'Labore et honore' hangs below. 53. [Bookplate for Imperial Cotton Co. by R&M] Printed in black ink on cream coloured paper. The scene depicts dark-skinned laborers working in a cotton field. In the right-hand side of the foreground, a laborer holds a large wicker basket full of cotton on their head. To the left are two other large wicker baskets full of cotton. At least four other laborers recede into the depth of the field. They wear loose, baggy clothing and wide-brimmed hats. In the background is a wide, low brick factory building with smokestacks on the far left and one low, square tower with a flag in the middle. Below this scene is the insignia of the Dominion Crown and the text identifying the Imperial Cotton Co. 54. [Bookplate for Ian Waldie by Alexander Scott Carter] In black ink on white paper, a sailboat at sea with a fish depicted in the waves below. Three seagulls are flying around the boat. A wide, bold floral border surrounds the image of the ship, with a few books and a lyre above it. 55. [Bookplate for Holford Walker] Pictured in black ink on white paper, is a bird close enclosed within a serpent ouroboros on a crest wreath with mantling extending from it, above a shield argent (silver) ; a bordure, argent ; with eleven quaterings. 56. [Bookplate for Henry Young and Alice Young by Joseph Winfred Spenceley] In black ink on beige paper. In the centre, standing on the name plate, is the image of knight crusader, holding with outstretched arms a broad ribbon inscribed with the word "Credo." His Norman pointed shield hangs in front of his sword from a strap at his left hip ; the charges, untinctured, are: barry of five, in canton a leopard contournd. At either side of him rises a large acanthus-like scroll surmounted by a leopard's head ; behind him hangs an arras curtain, draped and knotted at the top. Across the base ripples a ribbon, inscribed "Ex libris Henry and Alice Young." The whole is enclosed in a narrow, formal frame. 57. [Bookplate for Henry Flitcroft] In black ink, this chippendale-style bookplate consists of an asymmetrical escutcheon, or (gold), containing two chevronels, gules (red), each with the appearance of a label. The top chevronel is an elevated label, while the base chevronel is an inverted label. The label is a heraldic symbol representing the first son. The escutcheon also contains two escalopes over one fleur-de-lis. In typical chippendale fashion, the escutcheon is surrounded by elaborate floral mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the originator's name and place of origin. 58. [Bookplate for Glazebrook] Black ink on cream paper. Design has some heraldic features. At the top of the bookplate is a banner featuring black, serif, capitalized font. The banner sits atop a stylized castle with multiple towers and a circular wall. Behind the castle to the left and right extend wing-like features. In front of the castle is a shield argent with sable dots charged with a sable lion passant. Shield has a sable chief charged with three argent fleurs-des-lis. Armorial helm with mantling is topped with a sable demi-lion rampant wearing a crown atop a crest-wreath. The bottom of the bookplate features a rectangle designed to look like stylized wooden panels. It features large, capitalized, bold black serif font. The words are separated with floral decorations, each of a varying design. The first flower is found with six more pointed petals, a black centre, and two leaves. The second flower is smaller and rounder, but of similar design to the previous one also with two leaves. The last floral decoration looks like a maple leaf with a simple stem. 59. [Bookplate for George T. Turner by H. L. Peckmore] This philatelic bookplate consists of images of eight stamps. Six of the stamps (one elongated stamp in brown ink, two stamps in blue ink, and 3 in red ink) encircle a large circular stamp printed in black ink. At the lower right corner of the bookplate is the eighth stamp, printed in brown ink. Those stamps which are identifiable include: The stamp containing a hand of cards represents a stamp from the New York Consolidated Card Co., in use from 1876 to 1883 ; the stamp of a healthy man assualting a skeleton represents Sc. RS56, from 1880 for William E. Clarke - Hunt's Remedy ; the stamp containing a battleship represents a an issue from the Battleship Series of1898 ; and the stamp containing a bi-plane in the lower right corner represents the 1918 First Airmail Series - 6 Cents Curtiss Jenny. The remaining stamps have not been exactly identified. A circular seal at the lower left corner of the bookplate contains the originator's name and date ; and at the middle base is a rectangular box containing an identification of the library and an image of a set of books between book-ends. To the right can be found the artist's mark, "H. L. Peckmore". H. L. Peckmore & Son is a US printer of philatelic materials. 60. [Bookplate for George Short by R. Silvester] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale, charged with a mullet at precise middle chief. The dexter half, gules (red) with an ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts) chief, is charged with a gryphon, rampant. The sinister half, argent (silver), contains a fess, vert (green), charged with three stag's heads, cabossed. The escutcheon is crested by a wreath and a demi-gryphon, with wings displayed and elevated. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. The artist's mark, "Silvester sculp. 27 Strand, London." Is present on the bookplate. R. Silvester was a London engraver.
